History
The Northern New Mexico Welcome Center has been a place to find information and provide travelers with a place to rest for decades. The State of New Mexico initially ran it. However, in 2018, the state decided to close the welcome center due to budget concerns and a lack of visitors. Knowing that travelers and tourists use the welcome center as a rest stop, a place to find local and regional information and obtain free maps for their travels, the Village of Chama and the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce came together with a plan to keep the facility operational.
Now, the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce operates the welcome center to promote local businesses to travelers, provide maps, information about the state and bordering states, and advise travelers on road conditions and travel routes. Our friendly hosts and hostesses will do their best to be as helpful and accommodating to visitors in any way possible. The clean restrooms and welcoming personnel have made the welcome center a favorite stopping point for many. Stop in and see us on your next visit through the Chama Valley!

The Northern New Mexico Welcome Center is the only tourist information center within 120 miles of the Chama Valley. The Village of Chama Lodger’s Tax, Rio Arriba County Lodger’s Tax, and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad provide funding, but we are still dependent on donations to remain in operation. Please consider a donation to help us stay open for the public. The money you donate helps cover the costs of brochures, maps, utilities, and employee wages.
