Board Meeting Archives

July 2021

Happy August! The Chama Valley Chamber had its July board meeting on Wednesday, July 13th. We are excited to inform you that the Chama Valley Visitor Center is now open seven days a week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm! We are currently seeing approximately 100 visitors to the visitor’s center every day, and we would like to encourage all businesses to make sure they have their current business information in the visitor center.

Just as a reminder, the visitor center is available to all businesses, not just Chamber members. If you have a brochure or pamphlet that you would like made available to visitors, please bring them by. Our Adopt-A-Mile Clean-Up will be held on August 16th. We encourage all Chamber Members to participate in this event. We will meet at the visitor center at 5:15 pm, and every participant will be supplied with safety equipment and the supplies for the clean-up. If you are not a Chamber Member but would like to participate in this activity, we would love you to join us. While this is a Chamber-sponsored event, we should all do our part to help keep our village clean and beautiful!

Chama Days is right around the corner, and the Chamber is looking for more Parade Participants. The parade will be held on August 14th and is a great advertising opportunity for businesses and a fun community event. If you or your company would like to be a part of the Chama Days Parade, you can find more information and an application at chamadays.com or contact Alcorn Insurance Agency at 575-756-2197.

August 2021

The Chama Valley Chamber had its August board meeting on Tuesday, August 10th. We continue to see a large group of tourists coming into the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center, with a continued average of 100 visitors per day. While we have had some businesses bring in new brochures and business cards, we would like to encourage all businesses to make sure they have their current business information in the welcome center.

Just as a reminder, the visitor center is available to all businesses, not just Chamber members. If you have a brochure or pamphlet that you would like made available to visitors, please bring them by. Our Adopt-A-Mile Clean-Up was held on August 16th and was a success. We had eight individuals participate, and we accumulated eight trash bags of litter off the highway leading towards Chama West. We want to thank Chris Gallegos and his team for helping pick up the trash bags after we were finished and providing safety vests and trash bags for the clean-up.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad’s 50th Anniversary Celebration took place August 21st-August 29th and provided activities each day of the celebration. We are proud to support and celebrate the CTSRR in this incredible milestone! The CTSRR’s Local Appreciation Days are back this year. The Local Appreciation Day’s dates started on August 31st but will continue through September 7th. Locals who wish to book on the upcoming trains can book their coach seats either by phone or by visiting the ticket booth at the depot. Locals will receive 50% off their entire trip. Don’t let this opportunity to enjoy our very own Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad experience pass you by!

September 2021

The Chama Valley Chamber had its September board meeting on Tuesday, September 14th. Tourist season is beginning to wind down, but it is far from over. The Northern New Mexico Welcome Center continues to see a high volume of travelers and we want to encourage all the Chama Valley businesses to bring in their business cards and brochures so we can help connect these travelers with you. The visitor center remains available to all businesses, not just Chamber members. If you have a brochure or pamphlet that you would like made available to visitors, please bring them by.

The Chamber was proud to be a part of the Chama Valley Art Center’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on September 4th! After three years of work and renovations on the historic former parish hall and parochial school, the art center was able to complete its renovation project and is now fully open. Executive Director, Anita Massari, is doing an incredible job developing art programs for the Chama Valley, and we can’t wait to see what she will do next! I had the pleasure of attending the second ROCE workshop on September 18th. For those of you who may be unaware, the Rural Community Assistance Corporation in conjunction with Monika Varn is holding workshops at the Senior Citizen Building each month to help with the economic development of the Chama Valley. They are also presenting information on financial assistance and developing business strategies to help your business grow. Additionally, the workshop speaks to the Chama Valley Community as a whole and how we can work together to create a vibrant and thriving community where we all succeed. There are two more workshops, so if you would like more information, contact Monika Varn at 225-390-7047.

The hours of the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center have also changed formally. We are now open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. However, there is the possibility that we may be opening later or closed if the weather is awful. We will do our best to make sure that we open back up as soon as possible and cause the community as minor inconvenience as possible. Please don’t forget, the visitor center remains available to all businesses, not just Chamber members. If you have a brochure, pamphlet, or flyer that you would like made available to visitors, please bring them by.

January 2022

The Chama Valley Chamber had its January board meeting on Thursday, January 13th. We did things differently this time and had our first-ever Zoom meeting. We have seen a consistent decline in travelers stopping at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center, but we are still getting a few hundred stops per month. We are continuing to promote our local Chama Valley businesses. Our new website continues to grow in its reach, and our social media pages are increasing in followers daily. We have included New Mexico road conditions and Google Maps on our website to help users find information on the Chama Valley easier and continue to make our site and our social media pages informative and helpful.

Our next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 8th at 5:30 pm. As of now, the meeting will be held at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center. However, if a Zoom meeting is necessary, we will post the link on our social media pages for chamber members who would like to attend. If there is an item you would like included on the agenda, please contact Leah Phone at 575-756-2306 or info@chamavalley.com by Friday, February 4th. Don’t forget we have new benefits for our members! These include a few additional free benefits, as well as some low-cost additions to help promote our members’ businesses. Our website also provides news and updates, upcoming events, and job postings. If you want to see our new website or find out more information about what the Chamber can do for you, please visit http://www.chamavalley.com.

February 2022

The Chama Valley Chamber had its February board meeting on Tuesday, February 8th, and we were happy to meet again at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center. We continue to promote our local Chama Valley businesses to travelers and have seen an increase in interest in winter activities. This is exciting because we can see the potential of making the Chama Valley a winter destination. We are also seeing an increase in visitor packets sent out to potential tourists. To help provide information to interested travelers, we are putting together a tourism guide for the Chama Valley. This guide will cover our seasonal activities and provide information on our Chama Valley and its businesses. Our website and social media platforms continue to grow, and we are doing our best to share your social media posts with our followers.

Our next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8th at 5:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center. However, if a Zoom meeting is necessary, we will post the link on our social media pages for chamber members who would like to attend. March 2022

The Chama Valley Chamber had its March board meeting on Tuesday, March 15th, at Down Home Lodge & Family RV Resort. It was incredible, as this was the largest board meeting attendance that we have had in a long, long time. It was amazing to see so many businesses represented, and we hope you continue to attend! We have many projects going on right now, and last month, I mentioned the new tourism guide that we are working on. We are additionally working on a brochure for the Chama Valley and the Chamber. Another project that we are working towards is a new Chama map. This map will showcase most, if not all, of our local businesses. If you are interested in sponsoring this new map or would like more information, please contact us at info@chamavalley.com or 575-756-2306.

Our next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 12th at 5:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center, but if you would like to host one of our board meetings at your business, please let me know. April 2022

The Chama Valley Chamber had its April board meeting on Tuesday, April 12th, at Chama Trails Motel. We had a busy agenda with a tremendous amount of items to cover. Still, we cruised through and were able to get everything accomplished. If you haven’t noticed, the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center is in the process of getting a makeover! We have removed the bushes and a pine tree along the east side of the building. Removing the bushes and pine tree gives everyone a much better look at the beautiful mural on the east side of the building and creates a more inviting facility. Next will be touching up the mural by enhancing the colors and repairing any damage that has been done to the mural due to weather and age.

Memorial Day weekend is approaching and the Chama Western Heritage Days! It is a fun-filled, family-friendly event packed with activities for everyone! As part of the activities, the Chamber is sponsoring the Rio Chama Memorial 5K and 10K Run on the 29th. Registration will begin at 7 am at Gallegos Park, and the races will start at 9 am. There will be a $25 entry fee for the 5K and a $35 entry fee for the 10K, and all participants will receive shirts, and there will be cash prizes! Racecourse details will be shared during registration. If you want to participate or have any questions, please contact CVCC Executive Director Leah Phone at 575-756-2306 or info@chamavalley.com.

Our next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 10th at 5:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center, but please let me know if you would like to host one of our board meetings at your business. If a Zoom meeting is necessary, we will post the link on our social media pages for chamber members who would like to attend. If there is an item you would like included on the agenda, please contact Leah Phone at 575-756-2306 or info@chamavalley.com by Friday, May 6th. May 2022

The Chama Valley Chamber had its May board meeting on Tuesday, May 10th, at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center. We are continuing in the beautification process of the welcome center. The re-painting of the mural has begun, and our artist, Brenda Burke, is doing a beautiful job! We would like to thank Monika Varn for writing the grant that has made the landscaping and beautification possible. Jim Martens has graciously donated the train outside of the Shoppes of the Trophy Elk to the Chamber, and we are proudly displaying it for everyone to see as they come into Chama! The next phase in our landscaping will be to add some color through flowers and update our picnic tables.

The Chamber held an Adopt-A-Highway Clean-up Day on Monday, May 16th. We spent a few hours starting at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center and worked our way west. Over six trash bags were collected and discarded by the Chama Department of Transportation. We are so thankful to Chris Gallegos and his team for their helpfulness. The Chamber also sponsored our first Rio Chama Memorial 5K and 10K Run this Memorial Day Weekend. We had a great turnout, especially for the first year, and we are already looking forward to next year! Participants were able to run/walk a multi-terrain trail that took them from Gallegos Park up through downtown Chama and back to Gallegos Park. Winners of the races received medals donated by Alayna Alariana with Rio Chama Espresso and cash prizes donated by the Chamber and Rotary Club. Participants also received t-shirts and some other fun merchandise.

Our next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 14th, at 5:30 pm. We want to help promote your business, so if you have brochures or business cards that you would like displayed, please drop them off during these hours.

We are looking for volunteers to help greet and interact with travelers at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center! If you enjoy talking with new people, are friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and are interested in volunteering, we would love to have you help out. If you are interested or have any questions, please call 575-756-2306.

You can now advertise your business, events, etc., in our newsletter. If you want to learn more about advertising with us, call Leah Phone at 575-756-2306 or email info@chamavalley.com. Remember, the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center has take-home Covid-19 tests for FREE! Stop by during business hours and get the tests you need for you and your family. We are open seven days a week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Our next board meeting will be on Tuesday, December 13th, at 5:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Northern New Mexico Welcome Center, but please let us know if you would like to host one of our board meetings at your business. If a Zoom meeting is necessary, we will post the link on our social media pages for those who would like to attend. Everyone is welcome to attend our Chamber meetings, member or not. If there is an item you would like included on the agenda, please get in touch with Leah Phone at 575-756-2306 or info@chamavalley.com by Monday, December 12th. Any changes to the meeting, including the agenda, will be posted on our social media pages.
